Sierra Nevada, meaning ´snowy mountain range´, is situated just north of Granada, and only a couple of hours drive from the majority of beach resorts on the Costa del Sol. Situated so far south, skiers and sightseers alike are almost guaranteed sunshine at this beautiful resort – especially during early spring.

It is easy to combine a ski holiday with the beach resorts of Marbella, Puerto Banus and Fuengirola, and you can enjoy the best of sun, ski, beach and sea without having to drive too far. If you want to learn how to ski in a safe environment, the Sierra Nevada ski schools are among the best in Spain. Novice slopes allow you to enjoy a gentle introduction to skiing, and allow you to breath in the mountain air, before getting more adventurous on the faster slopes.

Spain is the second most mountainous country in Europe after Switzerland, and Sierra Nevada caters for thousands of visitors who flock here every season to enjoy one of the world´s most exclusive winter sports. The Sierra Nevada is popular with overseas visitors and locals, and the season usually lasts from November to March/April.

There are several ski schools in the village of Sierra Nevada and boot and equipment hire, including snowboards is readily available from the shops at the entrance. Children are also well catered for here, and there are two crèches in the main square of the village plus a kids ski club including lessons for the younger enthusiasts.

For the most adventurous and professional skiers, there are 5 black runs available and also a cross country circuit of 4 kilometres. Night skiing is also available on Saturdays from 1900 to 21.30 hrs subject to weather and snow conditions.

There are six ski areas within the Sierra Nevada, and with slopes to suit every ability from novice to professional, this fabulous mountain range provides fun for all the family in a stunning location. Prices are well below those offered in many of the French ski resorts, and you will find plenty of entertainment and aprés ski facilities in the village.

If you are looking to combine a trip to the Sierra Nevada with some sightseeing in the beautiful city of Granada, you will find plenty of affordable accommodation either near the ski slopes or in the city itself. From hostels to luxury hotels, Granada is one of the most vibrant cities in southern Spain, and if you are planning a tour of Andalucia, this is a great place to start out.

If you decide to stay in Granada, make the most of the excellent tapas restaurants in the city, and explore the old streets, quaint shops and pavement cafés in Albaicin.
